We often imagine that hearing from God requires an extraordinary moment. Yet a relationship with Him is also nurtured in the ordinary: a quiet prayer before the house wakes up, a passage of Scripture read slowly, or an honest conversation at the end of a difficult day.

Begin with presence, not performance

It is easy to turn time with God into another task to complete. We measure the length of our prayers, compare our understanding with someone else’s, or feel that we must arrive with the right words. But relationship begins with being present. You can come to God grateful, distracted, disappointed, or unsure. Honesty is a better starting point than a polished performance.

Choose a small, realistic rhythm. Put your phone aside for a few minutes. Read a short passage from one of the Gospels and notice what it reveals about Jesus. Speak to Him about what you are actually carrying today. Consistency can grow from a simple beginning.

Learn the character of the One you are listening for

Not every strong feeling is a message from God. Our hopes, fears, and preferences can all sound convincing. Scripture gives us an essential place to begin discerning what we hear. The voice we follow should be consistent with the character of Jesus, rather than encouraging cruelty, dishonesty, pride, or disregard for others.

You do not have to rush to label every thought. Make room for prayer, reflection, and wise counsel from mature believers. When a decision has real consequences, patient discernment is an expression of faith too.

Let listening become a response

Sometimes the next faithful step is very practical: offer an apology, keep a promise, speak kindly, or give your full attention to someone who needs it. A relationship with God shapes the way we live as much as the way we pray. Small acts of obedience matter even when nobody notices.

There will be days when your thoughts wander and prayer feels difficult. Return without making your struggle a verdict on your faith. The aim is not to manufacture a dramatic experience. It is to keep turning towards the God who knows you.

A moment to reflect

Where could you make a little room for God today? Rather than planning a perfect routine, choose one simple moment you can offer Him. Read, listen, speak honestly, and take the next loving step.
